Course Description
This continuing education (CE) course is designed for mental health professionals working with clients who have body image-related concerns, including those seeking support around weight-related goals. The course adopts a client-centered approach that prioritizes autonomy while addressing the complexities of social influences on both the client and clinician.
Participants will explore the history of body positivity and social justice movements that have challenged societal norms surrounding body size, while also recognizing that these frameworks may not always align with the needs of clients focused on body modification or weight-related goals. Clinicians will develop skills to facilitate compassionate, client-led discussions and apply therapeutic techniques such as CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing, EMDR, and IFS to support clients in navigating weight-related goals in a way that honors their experiences.
The course also covers cultural considerations, media literacy, and strategies for fostering client self-advocacy within healthcare systems. By the end of the course, participants will be equipped with the tools to support clients' personal growth, self-compassion, and informed decision-making regarding body image and weight-related goals.
Learning Objectives
At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:
Describe the evolution of the body positivity movement across its major waves from the 1960s to the present.
Describe personal and societal biases regarding weight and body image, and utilize strategies to manage these biases in a therapeutic setting to support client autonomy.
Apply compassionate communication and mindfulness techniques to validate and explore clients’ weight and body image goals, fostering self-compassion and curiosity.
Identify cultural considerations and awareness of media influences in therapy, helping clients navigate societal pressures related to weight and body image.
Integrate therapeutic techniques such as CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing, EMDR, and IFS to support clients in addressing body image issues, weight-related concerns, and related emotional challenges.
Explain client strategies for self-advocacy, helping them assert their needs and navigate healthcare systems, while encouraging autonomy in their therapeutic journey.

Certified as an EMDR therapist in 2016 and advancing to EMDR Approved Consultant by 2018, she has integrated parts work through Anchored Relational Therapy, enhancing her ability to address complex attachment wounds and emotional processing challenges. Her practice now includes EMDR and Anchored Relational (previously AIR Network) Therapy Intensives, aimed at providing clients with targeted, transformative experiences. Additionally, Dr. Britton has presented a previous CEU called Breaking Through Barriers: EMDR Therapy & Stabilization Techniques for Highly Dissociative Clients.
